Taiwan seeks middle middle way, Torch grins, Hu pouts.

Cadre seeks offset news for the Torch songs, and the pounding in the EU. This is a long cooked romance, and Ma was elected with the promise to thaw. Now Hu is spoiled. Ma struggles to reposition himself as pals with Hu while still open to the Dalai Clique. The Torch makes back room deals difficult. Not impossible. The Torch is not witless, and it has the work of the DC and the Uighurs and the Falun D. Many many brains working. Meantime, Siew will smile and wait for better air.

Torch is the tale. Torch and Mt Everest.

China and Taiwan are to hold what amounts to the highest-level meeting ever between leaders from the two sides on Saturday in a sign of a potential thaw in relations ahead.

Hu Jintao, China’s president, is due to meet Vincent Siew, Taiwan’s vice president-elect, on the sidelines of the Boao Forum for Asia on the Chinese island of Hainan, according to a spokesman for Mr Siew and a report carried by China’s official Xinhua news agency.
Mr Siew is not due to take office formally until May 20, but the low-key meeting will mark the first time ever that a Taiwanese elected leader has met such a senior Chinese official.
